FAQ

JIU JITSU

  • Jiu Jitsu / Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art with a strong emphasis on grappling and ground work. Whereas other martial arts rely heavily on speed and strength, Jiu Jitsu relies on leverage and proper technique to gain superior position on the ground where submission holds such as chokes and joint locks can be applied.

  • Yes. Fitness, age, ability, or experience does have some initial advantages; though, with skill and knowledge through practice and consistency, leverage is gained.

  • Not at all. If you have already trained in a different martial art that’s great but you don’t need any previous martial arts experience.

  • You don’t need to be fit or ‘in shape’ to start training Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu is an excellent full-body workout and a great way to improve your health and fitness. Everybody is welcome regardless of their level of fitness, age, ability, or experience. We focus on technique, and this is something absolutely anyone can do.

  • As with any other sport or martial art, accidents can happen. This is why safety is our number one concern. We take the necessary measures to provide a safe training environment for our members.

  • Yes, the resistance provided during training can improve reaction time, balance, core strength, and increase flexibility which can lead to reduced body fat and weight loss. The aerobic and anaerobic benefits provided during training can be more effective than doing regular exercise at the gym.

  • A typical class at VOA Jiu Jitsu begins with a short warm up followed by techniques and then sparring or the remaining time.

  • We encourage it however it is your choice.

Not everyone plans to be a competitor. You will still receive the same high level instruction and attention needed to reach your own individual goals for Jiu-Jitsu. The majority in most BJJ schools are non-competitors, but many still take pride in coming out to support the competition team at local and regional tournaments.

  • The Gi is a kimono uniform that is made of sturdy material designed to stand up to rigorous pulling. It provides grips that allow you to throw or control your opponent on the ground.

No Gi focuses on Jiu Jitsu without the benefit of grips or the Gi. Clothing such as shorts, yoga pants, rash guards are all acceptable (without zips, pockets or buttons).
